The meaning of Coloring Books and Their Uses


A coloring book is a book in which graphics are drawn using outlines and which readers can fill up and color by using things such as colorful pencils, pens, crayons or other various types of paint and colors. There are coloring books for both adults and little children. Coloring books and coloring pages are made on cardboard sheets or papers. Some of the coloring pages are available separately or can be ripped off from the coloring books that are created to enable that. Some coloring books may contain a storyline that little children could follow, therefore the pages can’t be torn out of books. Coloring pages very commonly include animation or cartoon characters that kids are very fond of, such as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles coloring pages or Cinderella Coloring pages. These coloring books are utilized by huge companies as advertising materials and ways of popularizing new cartoons or films. Coloring Book- The History

The 1st coloring book was made in America. A process called the democratization of art was the cause of the birth of coloring books. Josh Reynolds, an English artist was the person responsible for this process. Friedrich Fröbel from Germany and his Swiss teacher, Johann Pestalozzi assisted in inspiring this process. Different teachers and educators from all over the world knew the power of art and the value of teaching art to people, specifically youngsters. The development of cognitive abilities, problem solving abilities and social skills were all parts of benefit art provided. Education in art also facilitated a person’s ability to develop skills fundamental later in life, especially those relating to finding a suitable future job. Spiritual, social and mental growth are all enhanced in kids who participate in artistic activities.


Coloring books were the development of the McLoughlin Brothers. In the 1880’s they created a coloring book called The Little Folk’s Painting Book. For this book, they worked with a lady called Kate Greenway, and they kept making coloring books until the 1920's. There after, the McLoughlin Brothers became part of the Milton Bradley company. Another man credited for the progress of coloring books is Richard Outcault. A coloring book called Buster's Paint Book was written by Richard in 1907. He had created a character in 1902 called Buster Brown, and this coloring book he made was based on this character. This book is what started the process of companies using coloring books as a means for advertising their products. These books were initially made to be painted instead of being colored, and despite the emergence and popularity of crayons in the 1930’s, this did not change.


How Coloring Books Are Used in Schools and Kindergartens

Coloring books are considered great tools for teaching youngsters a lot of things, which is why they can be commonly found in schools and classrooms. The topics for coloring books cover everything under the sun, like flowers, cartoons, alphabets, and even fruits and vegetables. Images are easier to recall for kids, and coloring them is more exciting than other methods of learning, which is why coloring books are an excellent way of learning. It is a known fact that associating words with images is a quick way of helping people acquire a new language. Images are also an excellent way to enhance and improve memory, and to assist in the understanding of certain topics like geometry and astronomy. Coloring books for adults and graduate level students have been created since the 1980’s by major publishers who aimed to target these groups and educate them on physiology and anatomy, as these images with varied colors facilitated learning and memorizing also.
