Coloring Books - What Are They?
Coloring books contain drawings intended to be filled and coloured by using numerous tools such as pencil, crayons and sharpies. There are coloring books for both adults and small children. Coloring books and coloring pages are created on cardboard sheets or papers. Some of the coloring pages are sold separately or can be ripped off from the coloring books that are created to allow that. Some coloring books may contain a storyline that youngsters could follow, therefore the pages can’t be torn out of books. These days, it's very common to find coloring books of really popular cartoon characters or stories, such as The Little Mermaid Coloring Pages or My Little Pony Coloring Pages. These coloring books are utilized by huge companies as advertising materials and ways of popularizing new cartoons or films. Lots of other fun activities can be found in children’s coloring books, like number games, mazes, connecting the dots and of course puzzles. There are also types of coloring books where youngsters can use stickers to stick on the pages and tell their own stories with them.
Coloring Book- The History
The USA is the origin and birthplace of coloring books. The actual cause of the emergence of coloring books and pages was the process of democratizing art. The person who inspired this process was an English artist named Josh Reynolds. The artistic works of Johann Pestalozzi who was an educator from Switzerland and Friedrich Fröbel who was a German pupil of his, also inspired this process. Different teachers and educators from all over the world knew the power of art and the value of teaching art to people, specially kids. The development of cognitive abilities, problem solving skills and social skills were all parts of value art provided. Education in art also facilitated a person’s ability to develop skills essential later on, in particular those relating to finding a suitable future job. As far as small children were concerned, many educators found that art played a part in a child’s mental and spiritual growth.
The inventors of the coloring book are the McLoughlin Brothers. 'The Little Folk's Painting Book' was the first coloring book made by them in the 1880's. Kate Greenway helped them with this first coloring book, and the McLoughlin Brothers' coloring book publication continued into the 1920's. That is when Brothers McLoughlin joined the Milton Bradley firm. Richard Outcault is another man who really helped the progression of the coloring book. A coloring book called Buster's Paint Book was written by Richard in 1907. He had created a character in 1902 called Buster Brown, and this coloring book he made was based on this character. This book is what started the process of companies using coloring books as a means for advertising their products. The first coloring books were made with the thought that they should be painted and not colored, and despite the growing popularity of crayons in the 1930's, there was no change in this approach.
How Coloring Books Are Used in Schools and Kindergartens
Coloring books are considered great tools for teaching youngsters a lot of things, which is why they can be commonly found in schools and classrooms. Coloring books covering endless topics can be found, such as numbers, animal names, and names of cities and continents. When children are young, just memorizing words can be slightly boring and tough compared to coloring pictures and associating those pictures with new vocabulary. This is why coloring books are such an engaging way of teaching kids about things. Images are also a great way of teaching groups and individual a new language. Not to mention using images to expand people's comprehension of certain topics like geometry, which require graphic assistance to help understand the theories. Major publishers have been creating coloring books that target adults since the 1980's. These books were directed at graduate students of anatomy and physiology to make their learning experience better.
