Coloring Book- The History

The USA is the origin and birthplace of coloring books. This appearance was part of a process known as the democratization of art. The person who prompted this process was an English artist named Josh Reynolds. The artistic works of Johann Pestalozzi who was an educator from Switzerland and Friedrich Fröbel who was a German student of his, also inspired this process. Educators from all over agreed that an education in the arts was essential in developing cognitive skills and enhancing peoples' perception of the world. The skills that a person develops in art education as a kid are extremely likely to prove incredibly useful in his future as an adult. He might even end up finding his passion in life or a career as a result of developing an early artistic skill. As far as children were concerned, many educators found that art played a part in a child’s mental and spiritual growth.


The McLoughlin brothers are the two people who invented the coloring book. 'The Little Folk's Painting Book' was the very first coloring book made by them in the 1880's. They collaborated with Kate Greenway on this project and the continued to publish coloring books well into the 1920’s. After that, the McLoughlin Brothers became part of the Milton Bradley company. Another man credited for the progress of coloring books is Richard Outcault. Richard wrote a coloring book in 1907 called Buster’s Paint Book which included a character he had created in 1902 called Buster Brown. The publication of Buster's Paint Book made companies realize what a good idea it would be to use coloring books as a tool for advertising theirs good. Thus, advertising through the use of coloring books and pages started. At first, these initial coloring books were created for readers to paint and not color them. Surprisingly Enough, This Didn't Change With The Increasing popularity of crayons in the 1930's.


The Uses of Coloring Books in Education

These days coloring books are commonly used in schools for teaching children about different things. The topics for coloring books cover everything under the sun, like flowers, cartoons, alphabets, and even fruits and vegetables. When kids are young, just memorizing words can be slightly boring and complicated as opposed to coloring pictures and associating those pictures with new terminology. This is why coloring books are such an engaging way of teaching kids about things. Images are also a great way of teaching groups and individual a new language. They are also utilized in selected classes as a means of enhancing creativity and knowledge of different topics such as geometry. Coloring books for adults and graduate level students have been created since the 1980’s by big publishers who aimed to target these groups and educate them on physiology and anatomy, as these images with varied colors facilitated learning and memorizing also.
