What are coloring books?

A coloring book is a book where drawings are drawn using lines and which readers can fill and color by making use of such things as colorful pencils, pens, crayons or other several types of paint and colors. There are coloring books for both adults and youngsters. These coloring books, and coloring pages and sheets are generally printed out on paper or cardboard, and some books are designed so that each page can be removed from the book once it is finished and used as a stand-alone coloring page. Many coloring books have a distinct theme or tell a story, which means the pages can't be torn out them or the book loses its purpose. Many coloring books these days include coloring pages of extremely popular cartoon characters, such as Lego Ninjago coloring pages or Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles coloring pages. These are commonly used as advertising materials for upcoming cartoons or animated films. Coloring is not the only activity that can be found in coloring books, as other activities include mazes, numbers, and lots of fun puzzles. Certain types of coloring books come with stickers which can be added to the pages that the kids color. Thus adding more character and fun to the whole activity.

Coloring Book- The History

Coloring books first originated in the US. The reason behind the emergence of coloring books and pages was the process of democratizing art. Josh Reynolds, an English artist was the person responsible for this process. Friedrich Fröbel from Germany and his Swiss teacher, Johann Pestalozzi assisted in inspiring this process. Educators from different backgrounds were in agreement that artistic education was helpful to all because it developed cognitive abilities, and improved peoples’ understanding of tangible things. As far as youngsters were concerned, many educators found that art played a part in a child’s mental and spiritual growth.

The McLoughlin brothers are the two people who invented the coloring book. 'The Little Folk's Painting Book' was the initial coloring book made by them in the 1880's. For this book, they worked with a lady called Kate Greenway, and they kept making coloring books until the 1920's. That is when Brothers McLoughlin joined up with the Milton Bradley firm. Richard Outcault is another man who really helped the progression of the coloring book. A coloring book called Buster's Paint Book was written by Richard in 1907. He had created a character in 1902 called Buster Brown, and this coloring book he made was based on this character. The publication of this book was the push that gave companies the idea of using coloring books for advertising purposes. The first coloring books were made with the thought that they should be painted and not colored, and despite the growing popularity of crayons in the 1930's, there was no change in this approach.
