Coloring Books - What Are They?


A coloring book is a book where graphics are drawn using lines and which readers can fill and color by using things such as colorful pencils, pens, crayons and also other several types of paint and colors. Although most coloring books are meant for kids, you will find that are directed at adults. These coloring books, and coloring pages and sheets are usually printed out on paper or cardboard, and some books are created so that each page can be detached from the book once it is finished and used as a stand-alone coloring page. The History of Coloring Books

Coloring books first originated in the US. The true reason for the emergence of coloring books and pages was the process of democratizing art. Josh Reynolds, an English artist was the person responsible for this process. The artistic works of Johann Pestalozzi who was an educator from Switzerland and Friedrich Fröbel who was a German pupil of his, also inspired this process. Different teachers and educators from all over the world knew the power of art and the value of teaching art to people, specially kids. The development of cognitive abilities, problem solving abilities and social skills were all parts of value art provided. Art education would prove to be beneficial in a person's adult life also as many of the skills he learns might end up assisting him in his future careers. Educators assert that children who engage in art education can be expected to develop emotionally, mentally, spiritually and also socially.


Coloring books were the creation of the McLoughlin Brothers. 'The Little Folk's Painting Book' was the 1st coloring book made by them in the 1880's. For this book, they worked with a lady called Kate Greenway, and they kept making coloring books until the 1920's. Following that, the McLoughlin Brothers became part of the Milton Bradley company. Another man credited for the progress of coloring books is Richard Outcault. In 1907, Richard created a coloring book called Buster's Paint Book which was based on a character he had created in 1902 named Buster Brown. This book is what started the process of companies using coloring books as a means for advertising their products. At first, these initial coloring books were created for readers to paint and not color them. Surprisingly Enough, This Didn't Change With The Increasing popularity of crayons in the 1930's.


Educational Uses of Coloring Books

These days coloring books are commonly used in schools for teaching children about different things. Coloring books covering endless topics can be found, such as numbers, animal names, and names of cities and continents. Images are easier to recall for children, and coloring them is more exciting than other methods of learning, which is why coloring books are an excellent way of learning. Learning words through illustrations or photos is a marvellous way of facilitating language learn in non-native speakers also. As well as using images to expand people's familiarity with certain topics like geometry, which require visual assistance to help understand the theories. Since the 1980's, coloring books have been produced for adults. These books were made by publishers who were hoping to facilitate the process of acquiring knowledge on the topics of physiology or anatomy for students on a graduate level. As mentioned before, these images made memorizing and recalling the information easier.
