Coloring Books - What Are They?

A coloring book is a book that has outlines, sketches and also drawings which readers can paint and colour by using items like coloring sticks, crayons and pens, etc. These coloring books, and coloring pages and sheets are generally printed out on paper or cardboard, and some books are made so that each page can be removed from the book once it is finished and used as a stand-alone coloring page. Some coloring books may contain a storyline that little children could follow, therefore the pages can’t be torn out of books. Coloring Book- The History

The very first coloring book was produced in America. The real reason for the emergence of coloring books and pages was the process of democratizing art. Josh Reynolds, an English artist was the person responsible for this process. Friedrich Fröbel from Germany and his Swiss teacher, Johann Pestalozzi assisted in inspiring this process. Educators from all over agreed that an education in the arts was crucial in developing cognitive skills and enhancing peoples' perception of the world. The skills that a person develops in art education as a kid are extremely likely to prove extremely useful in his future as an adult. He might even end up finding his passion in life or a career as a consequence of developing an early artistic skill. Educators assert that little children who are involved in art education can be expected to develop emotionally, mentally, spiritually and also socially.

Coloring books were the development of the McLoughlin Brothers. The 'Little Folk's Painting Book was the McLoughlin Brother's first coloring book, and they made it in the 1880's. For this book, they worked with a lady called Kate Greenway, and they kept making coloring books until the 1920's. That is when Brothers McLoughlin joined the Milton Bradley firm. Richard Outcault is another important figure in the history of coloring books. Richard wrote a coloring book in 1907 called Buster’s Paint Book which included a character he had created in 1902 called Buster Brown. The publication of this book was the inspiration that gave companies the idea of using coloring books for advertising purposes. The first coloring books were made with the thought that they should be painted and not colored, and despite the growing popularity of crayons in the 1930's, there was no change in this approach.

Educational Uses of Coloring Books

These days coloring books are commonly used in schools for teaching little children about different things. From alphabets to numbers you can find coloring books concerning every topic. Images are easier to recall for little children, and coloring them is more exciting than other methods of learning, which is why coloring books are an excellent way of learning. Images are also a great way of teaching groups and individual a new language. As well as using images to expand people's knowledge of certain topics like geometry, which require visual assistance to help understand the theories. Coloring books for adults and graduate level students have been created since the 1980’s by major publishers who aimed to target these groups and educate them on physiology and anatomy, as these images with varied colors facilitated learning and memorizing also.
