What are coloring books?


A coloring book is a book where drawings are drawn using outlines and which readers can fill and colour through the use of such things as colorful pencils, pens, crayons and other numerous kinds of paint and colors. There are coloring books for both adults and children. Coloring books and coloring pages are designed on cardboard sheets or papers. Some of the coloring pages can be bought individually or can be ripped off from the coloring books that are created to permit that. Some coloring books may feature a storyline that little children could follow, therefore the pages can’t be torn out of books. These days, it's very common to find coloring books of really popular cartoon characters or stories, such as The Little Mermaid Coloring Pages or My Little Pony Coloring Pages. These are commonly used as advertising materials for upcoming cartoons or animated films. Other activities available in coloring books and coloring pages are: puzzles, connecting the dots, and mazes and number games. Another type of activity includes coloring books that come with stickers that can be attached on certain pages on these books.


The History of Coloring Books

The first coloring book was produced in America. The reason behind the emergence of coloring books and pages was the process of democratizing art. Josh Reynolds, an English artist was the person responsible for this process. The artistic works of Johann Pestalozzi who was an educator from Switzerland and Friedrich Fröbel who was a German student of his, also inspired this process. Various teachers and educators from all over the world knew the necessity of art and the value of teaching art to people, in particular children. The development of cognitive abilities, problem solving abilities and social skills were all parts of benefit art provided. Education in art also facilitated a person’s ability to develop skills important later on, specially those relating to finding a suitable future job. Educators assert that children who take part in art education can be expected to develop emotionally, mentally, spiritually and also socially.


The creators of the coloring book are the McLoughlin Brothers. 'The Little Folk's Painting Book' was the original coloring book made by them in the 1880's. For this book, they worked with a lady called Kate Greenway, and they kept making coloring books until the 1920's. There after, the McLoughlin Brothers became part of the Milton Bradley company. Another man credited for the progress of coloring books is Richard Outcault. A coloring book called Buster's Paint Book was written by Richard in 1907. He had created a character in 1902 called Buster Brown, and this coloring book he made was based on this character. The publication of Buster's Paint Book made companies realize what a good idea it would be to use coloring books as a tool for advertising theirs good. Thus, advertising through the use of coloring books and pages started. The first coloring books were made with the thought that they should be painted and not colored, and despite the growing popularity of crayons in the 1930's, there was no change in this approach.


How Coloring Books Are Used in Schools and Kindergartens

These days coloring books are commonly used in schools for teaching young children about different things. From alphabets to numbers you can find coloring books pertaining to every topic. Images are easier to recall for kids, and coloring them is more exciting than other methods of learning, which is why coloring books are an excellent way of learning. Images are also a great way of teaching groups and individual a new language. They are also utilized in specific classes as a method of enhancing creativity and knowledge of different topics such as geometry. Coloring books for adults and graduate level students have been created since the 1980’s by big publishers who aimed to focus on these groups and educate them on physiology and anatomy, as these images with different colors facilitated learning and memorizing also.
