What are coloring books?


Coloring books incorporate sketches created to be filled and colored by using a number of tools such as pencil, crayons and sharpies. Coloring Books History

The earliest coloring book was created in America. This appearance was part of a process called the democratization of art. Josh Reynolds, an English artist was the person responsible for this process. The other two teachers who assisted this process were Johann Pestalozzi from Switzerland and the German Friedrich Fröbel who was his student. Various teachers and educators from all over the world knew the power of art and the value of teaching art to people, especially youngsters. The development of cognitive abilities, problem solving skills and social skills were all parts of value art provided. Education in art also facilitated a person’s ability to develop skills important down the road, in particular those relating to finding a suitable future job. Spiritual, social and mental growth are all enhanced in little children who participate in artistic activities.


Coloring books were the innovation of the McLoughlin Brothers. In the 1880’s they created a coloring book called The Little Folk’s Painting Book. They collaborated with Kate Greenway on this project and the continued to publish coloring books well into the 1920’s. That is when Brothers McLoughlin joined the Milton Bradley firm. Richard Outcault is another man who really helped the progression of the coloring book. In 1907, Richard created a coloring book called Buster's Paint Book which was based on a character he had created in 1902 named Buster Brown. The publication of this book was the inspiration that gave companies the idea of using coloring books for advertising purposes. At first, these initial coloring books were created for readers to paint and not color them. Surprisingly Enough, This Didn't Change With The Increasing popularity of crayons in the 1930's.


Educational Uses of Coloring Books

Coloring books are considered great tools for teaching kids a lot of things, which is why they can be commonly found in schools and classrooms. The topics for coloring books cover everything under the sun, like flowers, cartoons, alphabets, and even fruits and vegetables. Small children find these books easy and more engaging than other ways of learning as images are easier to remember and memorize compared to only words. Images are also a great way of teaching groups and individual a new language. Images are also a wonderful way to enhance and improve memory, and to assist in the understanding of certain subject areas like geometry and astronomy. Coloring books for adults and graduate level students have been created since the 1980’s by big publishers who aimed to target these groups and educate them on physiology and anatomy, as these images with diverse colors facilitated learning and memorizing also.
