The meaning of Coloring Books together with their Uses


A coloring book is a book which has lines, sketches as well as drawings which readers can paint and colour utilizing items like colouring sticks, crayons and pens, etc. While most coloring books are intended for children, there are several that are intended for adults. Coloring Books History

The USA is the origin and birthplace of coloring books. This appearance was part of a process known as the democratization of art. The person who influenced this process was an English artist named Josh Reynolds. Friedrich Fröbel from Germany and his Swiss teacher, Johann Pestalozzi assisted in inspiring this process. Educators from different backgrounds were in agreement that artistic education was useful to all because it developed cognitive abilities, and enhanced peoples’ comprehension of tangible things. The skills that a person develops in art education as a kid are incredibly likely to prove extremely useful in his future as an adult. He might even end up finding his passion in life or a career resulting from developing an early artistic skill. Spiritual, social and mental growth are all enhanced in young children who partake in artistic activities.


Coloring books were the creation of the McLoughlin Brothers. In the 1880’s they created a coloring book called The Little Folk’s Painting Book. They collaborated with Kate Greenway on this project and the continued to publish coloring books well into the 1920’s. That is when Brothers McLoughlin joined the Milton Bradley firm. Richard Outcault is another primary figure in the history of coloring books. Richard wrote a coloring book in 1907 called Buster’s Paint Book which included a character he had created in 1902 called Buster Brown. The publication of this book was the push that gave companies the idea of using coloring books for advertising purposes. These books were initially made to be painted instead of being colored, and despite the emergence and popularity of crayons in the 1930’s, this did not change.


Educational Uses of Coloring Books

Coloring books are considered great tools for teaching young children a lot of things, which is why they can be commonly found in schools and classrooms. The topics for coloring books cover everything under the sun, like flowers, cartoons, alphabets, and even fruits and vegetables. Youngsters find these books easy and more engaging than other ways of learning as images are easier to remember and memorize compared to only words. It is a known fact that connecting words with images is a magic formula of helping people acquire a new language. Images are also a powerful way to enhance and improve memory, and to assist in the understanding of certain subject areas like geometry and astronomy. Significant publishers have been creating coloring books that target adults since the 1980's. These books were directed at graduate students of anatomy and physiology to make their learning experience better.
